Sinking Ship

Our Pivot message this week was on worldliness, a topic that seems to be a constant struggle to many of us. We have lots of excuses and 'reasons' for being close to things of the world. But if we are brutally honest with ourselves, we would have to admit that part of the reason we are worldly is because we want to be.

Matt used an excellent illustration when confronting the excuse of becoming more like the world in order to minister to those in the world. He said we could imagine ourselves as a rescue boat sailing on the sea of worldliness and waiting to help those who have fallen into the "water" (or the world). And it might seem to make sense to want to add a few buckets of water to the boat just to lower ourselves a little so that we are closer to those we are trying to help. But eventually we stop realizing how much water we're adding and end up sinking the boat. We're no longer there to help others-we're just an immersed ship aquarium. What makes others curious about us and interested in what we do if we are exactly like them? Why would they want what believers have if our lives are exactly the same as theirs? What would be the point?

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men." Matt. 5:13
